What is a skills matrix?
A skills matrix is a grid of people against skills, with a rating in each cell showing how capable each person is. It answers three questions every manager is asked sooner or later: who can do this, who is about to stop being able to do it, and where are we thin? (More on what a skills matrix is, with examples.)
Most organisations start with a spreadsheet. It works until there are a few dozen people, several teams and certificates with expiry dates. Then the file goes stale, versions multiply, and nobody trusts the numbers enough to act on them.
What SkillsLedger does differently
People rate themselves
Everyone keeps their own profile current, so the matrix doesn't depend on one person updating a file.
Managers sign it off
Line managers review and guarantee their team's ratings, so the matrix reflects reality rather than optimism.
Skill groups per team
Engineering, Sales, Compliance: each group has its own skills and is judged on what that team needs.
Certificates that warn you
Expiry dates on certifications, with warnings weeks ahead instead of surprises on audit day.
